Gir Forest National Park, Gujarat

Gir, a sanctuary to the king of the jungle, is inhabited by over 500 majestic Asiatic lions. In the 19th century, the royal cats were hunted as a sport, after which only a dozen Lions remained in India. Nawab of Junagadh turned the area of Gir into a protected sanctuary. The 1400 km square park has 7 perennial rivers which call out 38 species of mammals, 37 different reptiles and 300 types of birds. The wide variety of foliage and fauna have crowned Gir as the jewel of Gujarat’s ecological resources. 

Silent Valley National Park, Kerala

One of the last undisturbed tracts of the Western ghats rain forests and tropical moist evergreen forest, the Silent Valley is a world heritage site which was recognized by UNESCO in 2007. The Silent Valley, however, began attracting explorers after the British botanist Robert Wight began his documentation in 1857. Today the lush biodiversity remains untouched by human settlements. Feathered creatures like the Nilgiri wood-pigeon, Malabar Parakeet, among many others fly freely among this broadleaf forest.

Keibul Lamjao National Park, Manipur

Keibul Lamjao is an eye-catching park with distinct floating plant materials known as phumdis. The park is suspected to be one of the only floating sanctuaries of the world. The wildlife sanctuary was first established to protect the species of brow-antlered and dancing deer but soon caught the eye of nature lovers with its aquatic flora and fauna as well. Aside from a wide variety of deer, wild boars, Indian civets, jungle cats, and other mammals swarm this unique sanctuary.

Hemis National Park, Ladakh

As a high altitude park, Hemis National Park is home to 16 mammal species and 73 bird species. The beautiful park in Eastern Ladakh has the highest density of snow leopards in the world in a protected area. Approximately 200 snow leopards reside in Hemis. The mountainous regions also feature roaming unique species of sheep like the Great Tibetan sheep, Blue sheep and the Ladakhi Urial. Birds of prey like the golden eagle, Himalayan griffon vulture, and lammergeier vultures can often be spotted soaring through the blue vistas. 

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

As a World Heritage Site, Kaziranga National Park accommodates two-thirds of the global population of the rare one-horned rhino. The park also has a high density of tigers and was stamped as a Tiger reserve in 2006. Kaziranga is recognized as an important bird watch area by Birdlife International. The ‘big five’ animals in the park include; One-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, water buffaloes and swamp deer.

Keoladeo National Park, Rajasthan

Keoladeo is a paradise for birdwatchers. The park receives thousands of migratory birds every year. Created about 250 years ago, this sanctuary is named after Lord Shiva and even has a temple dedicated to the mythological Hindu god within the area of the National Park. Critically endangered birds like the Sarus Crane, Spotted eagle, eastern imperial eagle along with others take refuge in the soaring Park of Keoladeo. 5 Magical Days in Istanbul

If one were to describe Istanbul, it would be difficult to find enough adjectives to do justice to this amazing city. Built on seven hills with the Bosphorus on one side and the Maramara sea on the other, Istanbul is a blend of history, culture and ancient architecture with just the right touch of modernity that makes it ‘heartbreakingly charming.’

I visited Istanbul during the month of Ramadan and had expected my holiday to be a little dull. But on arrival, I felt the throb of a civilization akin to ours, filled with warmth and spontaneity; the beginning of an experience that was exciting and wonderful.

The drive to the hotel situated on the banks of the Bosphorus was very “Indian” in that it was marked by vehicular noise and disorder. Since it was early evening the restaurants and cafes too were bustling with people breaking their fast and the spirit was festive and fun-filled. Most of the roads were fairly mountainous and the bylanes that led to these tumbled out of smaller hillocks. Also, a number of bylanes had steep stairways alongside that served as walkways. Small three-four storey buildings surrounded the by lanes and interestingly some of them had common clotheslines that ran across, complete with laundry drying.

Next day, a ride on the hop-on and hop-off open-top bus took us from one end of the city to the other, giving a glimpse of Istanbul.

The first stop

The Sultanahmet area with its famous monuments was the first stop; here there are innumerable restaurants and cafes serving cuisines ranging from the local to Indian, Chinese and Italian. Above these eating places are the homes of the restaurant owners. Here, most of the windows are boarded up, allowing the women of the house to only peek at the noisy street below. All homes sport some version of the ‘Turkish evil eye’ which is either put up by a window or by the main door. One can absorb local flavor here.

In the midst of this hustle-bustle stand two of the most stunning monuments of the city — the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. The former, a Museum today, was originally built as a patriarchal basilica and remained the largest Cathedral in the world for a thousand years. Even though the bells and altars were replaced by minarets and mihrabsduring the Ottoman period, its Christian origins are still evident in the beautiful mosaics of the Mother and Child that have been uncovered.

Across the street is the Blue Mosque, which legend says was built to outdo the Hagia Sophia. This monument is painted in the most iridescent blue hues; quite unlike anything one had ever seen before. Decorated with a variety of blue-green tiles, from the Iznik region, and adorned with motifs such as carnations, roses, the cypress and various animals, the Blue Mosque, like the Hagia Sophia, is a testament to the artistic skills and workmanship of the artisans of ancient times.

Bargain spot

A visit to the Grand Bazaar or Kapali Carsi at one end of Sultanahmet is a must for all tourists. This indoor market has 4,000 stalls situated in 58 lanes selling everything from silver and gold jewellery, leather goods, colour scarves, shawls, kilims, carpets and Turkish sweets and jellies. Along with deep pockets, you’ll need good bargaining skills here. Only the stoic can return empty-handed from here.

Not too far away is the Egyptian Spice Bazaar, an indoor market selling spices and condiments. Nearly every store proudly advertises that it is its “ginseng” and other “specially-brewed aphrodisiacs” that were used by the sultans to remain virile forever!

Istanbul’s two famous palaces —the Topkapi and Dolmabaceh — relive the glory of the Ottoman empire. The jewels and costumes on display at the Topkapi palace are evidence of a royalty that lived a luxurious life. The traditional royal hamams have been replaced by large bathing houses in the city centre which are still used, mostly by women, as socializing spots.

At the Dolmabaceh palace, on the banks of the Bosphorus, the hierarchy among its women occupants is evident from the décor of the rooms and their proximity to the Sultans. This palace has modern relevance as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the first President of Turkey, spent his last years here. The Galata Tower is another must-visit tourist spot. Built in 1348 this tower stands atop a hill and gives a panoramic view of Istanbul.

It has been reinforced and reconstructed many times; in 1794 it was destroyed in a fire, and in 1832 its conical cap was blown off during a fierce storm. The sight from here is spectacular and you can see the city of Istanbul from the Maramara sea right up to the Strait of Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. The skyline is dotted with domes of many mosques all painted in shades of brilliant blue and crisscrossed by television cables and laundry lines.

Culturally, Turkey is supposed to be the home of the Sufi movement and watching a performance by the whirling dervishes at the Old Istanbul Railway Station is a treat. It started with an instrumental recital by some older Sufi men and the music was very Hindustani. Prior to the actual whirling, the performers paid tribute to a strange-looking, furry, vivid pink fabric. Then, they began whirling at an incredible pace and soon all one could see was an ocean of white fabric devoid of any human figures.

Next on the list was belly dancing; I was directed to the “Gazala night club”, reputed to be one of the best in Istanbul.

The main performer was incredibly talented, and her dance, far from being obscene, was subtly provocative and displayed a perfect blend of technique, style, control and coordination.

 Foodie’s paradise

Istanbul offers an interesting food experience to visitors. Several restaurants on the Bosphorus provide diners a breathtaking view of the Strait, the Bosphorus bridge which is beautifully lit up and the Asian side of Istanbul.

The food is delicious and most upmarket eating places serve fusion cuisine and by 11 p.m. turn into nightclubs, while the mid-and lower-range restaurants concentrate on Turkish meats and breads. The Taksim area has many mid-category cafes and restaurants.

Despite a few blips like boarding the wrong tram and being cheated by a taxi driver, five days in Istanbul provided an unforgettable experience.

A Cultural Expedition Through Cambodia

After a long wait at the Phnom Penh Pochentong International Airport, we boarded our colourful aircraft and were soon headed towards Siem Reap. In an hour-and-a-half, we touched Siem Reap International Airport, meticulously maintained and well on its way to complete modernisation. It was quite clear that Siem Reap’s local authorities knew their future was in tourism and all efforts were being made to ensure that it was well promoted.

From here we headed to the city, a half-an-hour’s drive from the airport. The landscape that flew past comprised mainly of paddy fields interspersed with quaint little houses, hoisted on stilts for protection against floods. Soon the green fields gave way to high-rising buildings — we were in the heart of the city.

Early the next morning, we set off for Angkor Wat, the entry to which is rigidly controlled and expensive. Every visitor had to pay for identity cards with photographs. Interestingly, no one asked for Cambodian currency, the Riel, and all transactions were made in US dollars. The drive from the gate to the main complex took us past a troupe of cheerful looking Cambodian men and women on bicycles sporting large palm leaf hats, very similar to the ones in Kerala. As we approached Angkor Wat, we found many children skipping school to sell artefacts. Surprisingly, all of them spoke with heavy American accents, sounding like they had been schooled by the leftover American GI’s.

We proceeded on towards the Angkor Conservation complex, which houses many temple complexes, the most visited being Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat. Our guide, Visith, had many a tale to tell. This temple, he said, was the work of many Kings, some of whom were Mahayana Buddhist and others who were Hindu converts. The religious influences stood out in the architecture and reliefs, which depicted the Mahabharata in detail. The other important carvings included the Churning of the Ocean, the many Apsaras and numerous busts and statues of Lord Buddha.

Each of the intricate carvings had a story to tell and reflected the ancient rulers’ deep desire for perfection and divinity. It is said that these temples were destroyed time and again, first by the Vietnamese Chams and then by the Thai invaders. They were then rebuilt by the Khmer regime starting with King Udayadityavarman I. Angkor Wat was converted into a Buddhist shrine by Khmer royalty in the 16th century and is now being extensively redone by the French Government. The intricate detailing leaves one spellbound and it is difficult to accept that people with such a rich heritage could have inflicted such intense destruction in recent years.

Our next destination was Angkor Thom, the walled city built by Jayavarman VII. Five monumental gates tower at the city’s entrance and are crowned by four gigantic faces of the Boddhisatva Avalokiteshvara. The Bayon, which is the most important part of this complex, has 54 gothic towers with over 200 smiling, but cold faces of the Boddhisatva; he is said to be watching over the 54 provinces which the old Khmer kingdom was supposedly divided into. The Bayon faces east and makes a stunning sight as the rays of the rising sun radiate each face of the Boddhisatva.

The reliefs in the Bayon depict the daily life of the Cambodian citizen — people playing chess, cockfights, military processions, Brahmins with their dangling pig-tails and even a Khmer circus! We spent the next two days visiting the many other temples in the Angkor complex, such as the Banteay Srei, a Shiva temple, which is, today, being restored by the Indian Government. As a matter of fact, many temples here are under renovation, and each is being restored by a different country.

Despite their brutal past, the Cambodians, as we soon discovered, were warm, cheerful and hospitable people. Yet, when one mentioned the Khmer Rouge (the Cambodian genocide of 1975-1979, in which approximately 1.7 million people were massacred), the fear on their faces was frighteningly real. It was hard to believe that man could be so cruel to his own kind. In fact, the Killing Fields at Cheoung Ek only re-emphasise the brutality of the Khmer Rouge.

Here was a country and people who were impoverished and far behind in time, with little access to what we in India take for granted such as electricity, education and medical facilities. Yet against all these odds, it was the “hope for a better future” that kept them alive.

Our next destination, a cheerful indoor market, provided that much-needed reprieve. We milled around stalls of jewellery, silverware, woodworked mementoes; there was so much to buy. The ever-smiling shopkeepers bargained enthusiastically and made sure that we left pleased. After burning holes in our pockets, we set out to an Art Center, for an extended shopping spree. It was interesting to learn that the Centre, which was funded by the French, taught art free to anyone who wanted to learn.

Soon, it was time to say goodbye. Suddenly the similarities between India and Cambodia were clear. Here were two countries with very similar cultures, religious affiliations and problems. Unfortunately, Cambodia had been the victim of a terrible and gruesome Civil war and was working hard to make up for lost time.

As we boarded the plane back home, we couldn’t help wondering if Cambodia had still been a part of India and the Cambodians believe it still is, would it have been so far behind?

How to get there

By air: There are two international airports in Cambodia that are well connected with the neighbouring countries.

By land: All neighbouring countries have border crossing with Cambodia. Here are some tips when reaching Cambodia via these countries.

• Thailand:

Visas are available on arrival for both directions. Visitors can take the express boat from Koh Kong to Sihanoukville for $15 (one way) and pay an extra $5 to reach Phnom Penh by air-conditioned buses. The entire journey will take about three-and-a-half hours. Tourists landing at Poipet can avail of the one-way taxi service ($15) to go to Siem Reap, which is five hours away.

• Vietnam:

Visas are available on the arrival for both directions. You can take a taxi, van or minibus at Chhbar Ampov market, Phnom Penh, that leaves every early morning to Ho Chi Minh City. The ride costs $10 per trip.

• Laos:

Visa is not available on arrival. It is now possible to cross in both directions between Stung Treng, Cambodia and Voeung Khan, Laos, on the Mekong River.

Where to stay: Accommodation ranges from standard to luxury hotels in both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, from $50-$2,000. Guesthouses are available from $5 to $30.

Getting around: Air travel, bus, ferry, taxi and pickup trucks are the most common means of domestic transportation.
